SHORT: Latest ‘Scary Endings’ anthology entry, ‘Am I Beautiful?’ (2017), based on Japanese legend

SHORT: Latest ‘Scary Endings’ anthology entry, ‘Am I Beautiful?’ (2017), based on Japanese legend

WHAT’S ON THE MENU: Online horror anthology series Scary Endings offers up another serving of short-form terror, Am I Beautiful?. This time around, writer/director John Fitzpatrick (Skypemare) and the Scary Endings team look to an ancient Japanese ghost story, Kuchisake-onna (‘Slit-Mouthed Woman’), for their inspiration:

May (Sarah Scott) and Zach (Abraham Martinez) are moving into their new home unbeknownst to the evil spirit haunting their bathroom mirror – the Slit-Mouthed Woman (Belinda Gosbee). She’ll ask you a question; answer correctly and she’ll spare your life but at a cost…

Interestingly, this episode is the first to be shot entirely on iPhone. To our eyes, cinematographer Nicholas Kaat‘s work looks professional as always, which speaks volumes about the potential quality of current smartphone videography. This should serve as a huge encouragement to all you budding horror filmmakers out there!

SHORT: Check out ambitious new episode of ‘Scary Endings’ anthology: ‘The Water Rises’

WHAT’S ON THE MENU: Online horror anthology series Scary Endings kicks off the new year with what may be its most ambitious episode yet, The Water Rises. Writer/director John Fitzpatrick (Skypemare) and the usual gang of suspects have put together an intense, nasty piece of work set aboard a cruise ship. Two newlyweds find themselves trapped in one of the ship’s elevators when disaster strikes. As the water rises, so does the tension… and the terror.

From a technical standpoint, this was clearly a challenging shoot, as evidenced by the “Behind the Scenes” video below. The Scary Endings team’s efforts really pay off, giving us a claustrophobic, heartbreaking entry in what has grown to become one of our favorite horror anthology series.

The Water Rises co-stars Empire‘s Kaitlin Doubleday and co-producer (and frequent Scary Endings actor) Adam J. Yeend. It also features voice-only cameos from horror veteran Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever, Skypemare) and co-producer Ryan Dillon.

TRAILER: Tech dystopia series ‘Black Mirror’ Season 3 debuts October 21st – this time on Netflix

TAGLINE: “The future is bright.”

WHAT’S ON THE MENU: This Friday, just in time for Halloween, Netflix will gift us with six new episodes of one of the most innovative, chilling, and dark series of the past decade. Black Mirror jumps ship from Britain’s Channel 4 and BBC America to the online streaming giant, which can only be a good thing. Freed of the shackles of basic cable censorship and with a sizable bump in budget, the series stands poised to deliver still more hard-hitting scenarios involving a future that seems just around the corner—and all too plausible.

All six episodes of Black Mirror will be available for streaming on Netflix on Friday, October 21st, 2016. Time to get your binge on!

Horror serial ‘Deeper Than Hell’ to debut on Morbidly Beautiful October 7th, 2016

WHAT’S ON THE MENU: Horror site (and fellow Crypt TV member) Morbidly Beautiful is teaming up with writer Josh Millican and artist Sean Wilson on the dark horror serial Deeper Than Hell. While the site has featured creative writing in the past, this will be its first recurring series. Here’s the official one sentence synopsis:

Deeper Than Hell tells the story of Sonny and Drew, two heroin addicts living in the tunnels below Las Vegas who go on a bizarre pilgrimage underground.

Josh Millican is best known as a prolific horror blogger (currently featured on HorrorFreakNews.com, Blumhouse.com, and PopHorror.com). He’s also the Director of Community for CryptTV. “Most people know me as something of a journalist, so I’m excited to get back to my creative roots,” said Millican about the project. “My goal is to create compelling characters and storylines that people will be excited to follow, something that readers can look forward to. Expect plenty of cliffhangers!”

Sean Wilson is an artist known for his unusual and often unsettling work, including the poster (seen here) for the upcoming feature film Death House, described as “The Expendables of Horror.” He will contribute original artwork and “inspiration” for each chapter of Deeper Than Hell. Millican is enthusiastic about their collaboration: “Sean’s got an incredible, wicked style that’s all his own. I’m excited and honored to be working with him to create a unique and terrifying universe for readers to get lost in!”

While plot details are being closely guarded, Deeper Than Hell will resonate with fans of horror movies and literature.

“Fans of Lovecraft and Clive Barker will love it,” said Millican. “It’s got some parallels to Alice in Wonderland and Dante’s Inferno, but I’m also drawing influence from 1980’s and 1990’s sci-fi and dystopia. And cults!”
